Existen múltiples ideas erróneas sobre las lesiones cerebrales traumáticas, su proceso de recuperación y evolución; ideas que acostumbran a tener su origen en una falta de información influida por la imagen que, desde los medios de comunicación, se muestra del daño cerebral. Desarrollo. Partiendo de su experiencia clÃnica, los autores de este ensayo exponen su visión personal sobre algunas de las ideas erróneas más recurrentes en el ámbito de la rehabilitación neuropsicológica del traumatismo craneo- encefálico: 1) Todos los déficits son evidentes, 2) La recuperación depende principalmente de la implicación del paciente: más esfuerzo es igual a una recuperación más rápida, 3) Dos años después del traumatismo craneoencefálico no hay posibilidad de mejora y recuperación y 4) El “milagro†de la recuperación se producirá en el momento que se encuentre el tratamiento o profesional adecuado. Estas y otras creencias pueden incidir de forma directa o indirecta sobre el proceso de recuperación, asà como las expectativas depositadas en éste por familiares y pacientes. Conclusiones. Facilitar información veraz, clara y honesta, en el momento oportuno, ayuda a los afectados y familiares a comprender mejor los déficits, el curso de la recuperación, asà como a adaptarse a la nueva realidad derivada de un traumatismo craneoencefálico.

Abstract
There are many misconceptions about traumatic brain injuries, their recovery and outcome; misconceptions that have their origin in a lack of information influenced by the image that the media show of the brain damage. Development. Based on clinical experience, the authors of this essay sets out his personal view on some of the most frequent misconceptions in the field of neuropsychological rehabilitation of traumatic brain injury: 1) All deficits are evident; 2) The recovery depends mainly on the involvement of the patient: more effort, more rapid recovery; 3) Two years after traumatic brain injury there is no possibility of improvement and recovery; and 4) The “miracle†of recovery will occur when is found the appropriate professional or treatment. These and other beliefs may influence directly or indirectly on the recovery process and the expectations placed on it by the families and patients. Conclusions. Provide accurate, clear and honest information, at the right time, helps patients and their families to better understand the deficits, the course of recovery and to adapt to the new reality resulting from a traumatic brain injury.
